Thoughts On Shi'i Philosophers Responding To Modernity
Assalamu alaykum. I am just recording this with a reflection on something called the Berggruen Institute Institute, which I saw online. They are providing $1 million as a prize to a humanistic thinker who has helped to promote understanding in this day and age, particularly following in the wake of modernity.
So, they have a panel of judges, and they are going to assess the work of a thinker, a philosopher, who has contributed significantly to how we understand ourselves in the modern world. So this is the Berggruen Institute Institute, and it is called the Berggruen Institute Prize. Again, some of my thoughts in regard to this are why we don't have significant thinkers of a Shi'i background or Shi'i thinkers who can get their voice out there, who have something to contribute in this debate?
At the moment, we have a polarized world where we have Shi'i thinkers from a few countries whose works are not very well known globally, or if they are, perhaps, say, one or two names that we might be able to think of. They are not really teaching from the position of a classical Shi'i foundation. And this is something that, again, is worth reflecting on.
Where are our Shi'i thinkers? Where are our contemporary Shi'i philosophers who can engage with the circulation of ideas that is shaping society today? That's my thought for today. InshaAllah, I will follow up with more thoughts. Thank you.
