Notes And Commentary On Chapter 42

Definition Of Mujmil And Mufassir Ahadith

Among the scholars of later era; just as the Ahadith are divided into two classes on the strength of its authenticity, in the same way they further classify the Ahadith on the basis of its meaning and connotations.

Mujmil (abstract) was a hadith, where the presenter had not made the meanings of the contents of narration clear in the mind of the recipient. Whereas, Mufassir and Mufassil narrations were the ones where its narrator made the importance and implications of the hadith fully clear, without any misconception.

It was an established fact that similar to the Verses of Qur’an, Ahadith were also divided into common, special, absolute, confined, abstract and detailed modules. In reality, there was no difference between them. In fact, a common (hadith) was suitable for the special, absolute for the confined and an abstract was applicable for detailed. In this way, they elucidated each other.

It is also mentioned that some Ahadith clarified the contents of the other traditions e.g., if a ruler issued a decree that the learned should be respected and then he issued another decree that those scholars who were fornicators should not be valued. Thus, in reality there was no contradiction between the two decrees. As a matter of fact, the second decree supplemented the first ruling.
